How to study for VCE Maths Methods (Exam 1 & Exam 2)
A practical study approach for VCE Mathematical Methods: the difference between the tech-free and CAS exams, what to drill, and how to use past papers well.
Methods rewards two things: fluent by-hand technique and disciplined exam habits. Here's a study approach that targets both without wasting time.
Know the two exams
- •Exam 1 is tech-free (no calculator): short-answer, tests core skills — differentiation, antidifferentiation, algebra, probability by hand.
- •Exam 2 allows CAS: multiple-choice plus extended-response, tests applying those skills to longer problems.
- •Study for them differently: Exam 1 needs speed and accuracy by hand; Exam 2 needs strong CAS technique and setting-up problems.
Drill weak topics, not comfortable ones
It feels productive to redo topics you're already good at, but marks come from fixing weak ones. Track your accuracy by topic and spend most time where it's lowest.
Use past papers properly
- •Do full papers under timed conditions — timing is a skill you have to train.
- •Mark honestly against the scheme; note which marks you dropped and why.
- •Re-do the exact questions you lost marks on a week later.
Build an error log
Every mistake is a future mark. Keep a running list of the errors you make (sign slips, forgotten domains, early rounding) and review it before each practice session. ATAR99 keeps this automatically as a mistake book covering the whole paper.
