How to study for VCE General Maths

VCE General Maths is application-heavy and CAS-reliant. Know your calculator, master the core areas, show working, and practise past papers.

General Maths rewards accuracy and calculator fluency more than hard theory. Marks come from applying the right tool quickly and showing your working.

Know your CAS cold

Most of General is done on CAS. Being fast and accurate with statistics, finance (TVM solver), matrices and graphs saves time and prevents errors — practise the calculator steps until they're automatic.

Cover the core areas

  • •Data analysis (summary statistics, boxplots, regression).
  • •Recursion & finance (loans, investments, TVM).
  • •Matrices and networks/graphs.

Show working and practise papers

Even with CAS, write the setup and key values — method marks need to see them. Do timed past papers and review every dropped mark. ATAR99 keeps a mistake book of the whole paper.

Put it into practice

Sit real past-style exams and get your written answers marked mark-by-mark.
