How to study for VCE Chemistry (Units 3 & 4)
Master the mole concept, learn reaction types, write structured answers, and know your data book — a practical VCE Chemistry study guide.
Chemistry is part calculation, part explanation. Nail the calculations and learn to write precise structured answers, and you'll stop leaking marks.
Nail the mole concept
Most calculation questions come back to moles. Be automatic with n = m/M, c = n/V, and stoichiometry from balanced equations. If moles are second nature, titration and energy calculations become routine.
Learn reaction types and 'why'
- •Group reactions by type (redox, acid–base, organic) rather than memorising each one.
- •For organic, learn the pathways and conditions, not just products.
- •Be ready to justify, not just state — exams reward reasoning.
Write like the marking scheme
Structured-response marks go to specific points: the correct equation, the reason, the units. Practise writing answers that hit each point explicitly. ATAR99 marks your answers against the scheme so you can see which point was missing.
