How to study for VCE Biology (Units 3 & 4)

VCE Biology is about explaining, not calculating. Learn the command words, link cause to effect, know key terms, and practise extended responses.

Biology marks are won and lost on how you write. The content isn't hard to understand — the skill is answering the exact question with the right detail.

Read the command word

  • •"Describe" wants what happens; "explain" wants why/how; "compare" wants similarities AND differences.
  • •Answer the verb that's used — a perfect description earns nothing on an "explain" question.

Link cause to effect

Most lost marks are incomplete chains. Don't stop at the first step — spell out the consequence (e.g. "the inhibitor blocks the active site, so fewer enzyme–substrate complexes form, so the reaction rate decreases").

Use precise terms and practise writing

Learn key terms exactly and use them. Then practise extended responses and get them marked — Biology improves fastest when you see which specific point an answer was missing. ATAR99 does this mark-by-mark.

Put it into practice

Sit real past-style exams and get your written answers marked mark-by-mark.
